your favorite head/cam/intake setup on a shortblock 302ci??

custom parts and can barely brake 13s? Those are some seriously crappy parts. Bolt ons with a mild cam should be in the 13s without even touching the heads. Most custom setups should get you well into the 11s, with some being in the 10s

Why is getting a custom setup not for the inexperienced? All you do is send a builder a list of what you want your car to do(DD, full on race car, weekend warrior, etc.), he sends you a part list with price, you pay him, you get the parts.. they get installed. Simple as that. This is going under the simple assumption that you actually talk to a reputable builder such as ed curtis.

i guess i didn't think about talking to a builder. i was just assuming that he was doing everything himself at home, armed with whatever knowledge he may have. yeah, talking to a good engine builder would be the way to go.

Don't underestimate a well setup pushrod!

and believe me, i have never once under estimated a push rod engine. the only reason i have a mod motor is because it's in a car that has a body style i like!

i hear ya, but we're talking about a stock shortblock with a good topend. you won't find 10's on a stock short block, and we've all seen those people with "custom" parts that can hardly break 13's. i'm just thinking that an off the shelf top end kit is a good way for an inexperianced engine builder to know he's going to and be able to actually make good power without wasting money

Well now the car runs great and its still not tuned.

I just imagined some guy sitting at a work table with a block of metal, and sand paper, sanding down a cam himself by hand...

If you're really set on getting the most power possible, or getting a setup suited for you, custom is not that much more expensive, most people will charge you a couple of hundred for their time in speccing a whole h/c/i setup.

At the end of the day, there is always going to be some clownshoe that just throws money at parts and expects the wourld out of the setup, only to run bolt-on Gt times, and there are people that run proper setups that surprise alot of people, because a good portion of the people nowdays seem to fall in the 1st category. Putting together a good top end kit isnt rocket science, but it does take some knowledge, and taking advice from people that have done it before doesnt hurt. There are plenty of knowledgeable people on this site that will point you in the right direction for free, take it all in!

Not to insult anybody's knowledge or experience, but i'm willing to bet 99.9% of the people on this site don't have the knowledge or experience that the top engine builders have, if they do, they would probably be getting paid to do it. It's different reading up on various builds, reading up on parts, and reading forums, but the real engine builders have a thorough knowledge of how all the variables of heads affect air flow, how a cam affects all the different events possible, and how this these combined effects acts upon the car as a whole, not to mention they have probably tried and tested most big name heads and cams and see how they react with each other.

Go on any forum(a lot of yellowbullet.com posts, and hardcorels1.com(ed curtis posts here a lot)) where people REALLY talk about heads/cams and the theory behind them and how they work, and you, and most people, will probably get lost in the innumerable amount of variables and acronyms thrown around. Hell, the builders themselves argue about what stuff works and what stuff doesn't.

Setting up a cam isn't as easy as setting a duration with a random lift and hoping for the best, and heads aren't all about maximizing your peak CFM.

i did modularheadshop stage 2's, degreed them in and have a tune from vmp im florida. i've yet to get it on a dyno to check the tune out but the car feels pretty strong

Nice man, those are pretty close to the HiTech stage 2's aside from a slightly different lobe separation, and those are KILLER cams for a bolt-on PI 2V! There was a guy running deep into the 12's N/A with a very similar setup.

I know a guy in the Corral was running high 10's with TFS heads, I think comp cam, and Holley intake? I'd have to look it up. I know the car is light but he was making alot of power too.

If you ever want to buy a set, or have a set of slicks for a 15'' rim, you can mount em on my prostars for the weekend or something. Then come the 6K launches
