Since I have the car apart, how far should I go. I would really like to do a cam and maby some heads if I couold do it cheap enough. Is the GT40 stuff that much of an improvement over what I have now as far as heads and intake go. I am going to do an intake of some kind but I am not sure what one yet. My goal for the car would be 300-350hp at the rear wheels before spray. Can I do that with GT40 heads, intake and a cams of some kind? Will also be doing long tubes, X pipe, cat back and either 3.73's or 4.10's at the same time.

If you're going to Spray the GT (or add a power adder) I'd rebuild the 5.0 with all new bearings, rings & have the block checked!! ...Maybe even bore it over 30 or line hone the cylinders if they look good...and make the block last!! ...Otherwise, with 160k you never know!

At the rear wheels you would be around 285-290 wiith the gt40x and rest of the stuff. Maybe more with a custom grind cam. Steeda # 18 and # 19 are also good cams, I'd take them over an E or B, but like the F cam. 350rwhp is tough without going to a stroker or a high revving 302 with big heads and stuff. There is a guy on Corral.net with off the shelf TFS stuff and stock bottom end running high 10's NA but it is not the norm. And he has ALOT of dyno tuning time playing with everything to get the car 100% of it's potential.

i wouldnt bother boring/rebuilding the bottom end if your gonna spray it, if a 302 block is gonna pop from spray its gonna pop, better off getting a set of nice heads (trick flow, edelbrock or afr) and a good cam, stay away from alphabet cams they suck....i dont see you making anywhere near 300 with gt40 heads and an alphabet cam...
Yeah I would definitely get the engine rebuilt, I'm hoping, as long as nothing else comes up to get mine rebuilt next year. I'm planning on getting some gt40 heads and intake off of an explorer, for a little bit of hp gain. It depends on how much you want to spend as to what to get. Trickflow makes some really good heads, course they should at 1300 a pair or so.
I've seen a dyno of GT40X with F-cam that was 290 rwhp, imho thats the only FRPP cam I'd try. Comp XE grinds are much better, and a custom even more so. Lunati, Crane, and Crower have some good ones as well.
The Edelbrock E-Street heads are not a bad deal for around $899 new, you of course need an adjustable rocker with them as well since they are studded not pedestal.

I would just get the Trickflow kit with heads, cam, etc included. Thats what I shouldve done in the beginning instead of piecing together the first build of the 302. I think I spent more doing that than just buying one of the kits. Now Ive got a built 347 in the car and a different pieced together combo.
The GT40 shit is better than stock Mustang parts but remember its just stock shit off an Explorer. You might be happy with it for a little while but youre going to want more power/speed and you'll end up buying heads/cam/intake/etc again anyway so buy good parts now and you can use them if/when you build the motor.
If the car has a 5 speed or if you plan on doing a 5 speed swap get 3.73's. Ive got 4.10's now with a T5 and first gear is useless and other gears wind out way too quick.
I got them when the car had an AOD and they were great with that but theyre really too much with the 5 speed now, especially with a built motor. I just dont have another $500+ to swap gears again.

You and I think way too much alike. If it's gona blow, some fresh bearings and machine work aint gona help that. That's why they call it "spray and pray". $250 at the local salvage yard gets me another one to try again.
My budget is actualy only about $1200 right now. That's why I was looking at the stock explorer stuff. I migh be able to go a bit higher than that but not much. Schools have let out for the summer and crack sales are way down this time of year.

GT40P heads/Explorer intake and leave the stock cam in it with some 1.7 rockers. The stock valve springs won't take much anyways. Plus there are ALOT of guys making good power this way and getting fast times. I think the fastest is a 11.9 NA with stock Exploder shortblock with a Mustang HO camshaft. I have seen a dyno of a GT40P combo that made 279rwhp which is not bad at all given the cost per $$$. That was with the STOCK cam too.
I would also like to make 100% sure that the parts I want to use will all go together. I really like that cobra intake and want to make sure that if I get one it will work with the GT40P heads. I do understand that with thoes heads and that intake I will end up getting rid of alot of the EGR and what not.

Well, here's how this is going to work. I don't have the money at this moment to do everything the way I want so I will throw the exhaust on it for now and put it back together so I can drive the thing for the summer. This way I can get all my parts together and do everything at one time. I would even like to find another AOD to take apart and build. I am more excited about build this car for some reason than I have been about any other project I have done. There is something about this car that is screaming 10 second 1/4 mile.
Since you're a chevy guy... just piece together an LQ(LSX) motor for <2k They already sell everything you need for fox body conversions. kooks even sells ready made manifolds for fox body lsx swaps
