Ford Mustangs don’t get much rarer than this. The Mustang GT Convertible Concept that debuted at the 2003 North American International Auto Show and revolutionized the modern muscle car is for sale. This roadster and its hardtop twin signaled the shift to the 2005 Mustang’s retro bodystyle. It was a huge success, and Chevrolet and Dodge followed suit with their Camaro and Challenger.
The overall design has a very distinct 1968 Shelby vibe, from the shape of the upper and lower grilles to the dual hood scoops and wide sequential taillights. The 20-inch wheels and a silver-trimmed style bar modernize the exterior, while the red and aluminum interior border on futuristic.
This car’s sibling—the Mustang GT Concept Coupe—was powered by a 400-horsepower supercharged 4.6L V8 with a very attractive engine cover, but the listing from the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction, where the convertible raised $175,000 for charity, identifies the engine as a 3.9L, likely from a 2004 V6 Mustang. We can’t find any photos of the convertible’s engine bay, which means this this car may have been hiding the 3.9 all along.
The car is more than 10 years old and is showing signs of the attention it’s received. The grille pony seems to be broken, and the paint was fading and the leather on the Recaro racing seats was faded and cracked when we last saw the car in 2005.
