It was $950 total with taxes, fees, etc..for a week. I got a 20% discount through AAA. I had originally rented a coupe because I thought it would be too chilly for the vert. They are supposed to guarantee these cars but no coupes were available. They offered me a Jetta instead. 
I was like no way, so they gave me the vert upgrade for 1/2 price plus my 20% discount. I think it would have been another couple hundred without that.
I've never done L.A. to San Diego but I heard San Diego is very nice. I think the ride is only 2 -3 hours though. I'd say its worth it if you're doing L.A. to San Francisco or vice versa but not sure about L.A. to San Diego (unless you're going to be doing lots of driving). Thats up to you though, I thought it was well worth it!
