The fourth round of the SCCA World Challenge is at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this week where four Mustang teams with five cars will be competing for top honors in the GTS class. Going into the race Justin Bell is undoubtedly the favorite of the Mustang drivers, currently sitting first in the standings and having been on the podium in three of the first four races this season in the Tiger Racing Boss 302S. He finished tenth at the last race at Miller Motorsports Park, but will get to drop 70 pounds of reward weight for this weekend. Bell qualified his Boss 302S in 6th earlier today, but will hoping to quickly move up in the field much like he did in previous races.
“Laguna Seca happens to be a racetrack that has been very good to me,” said Bell. “I won the world championship for Dodge there; I won in Trans-Am there, and it’s probably my favorite racetrack in America. For me to win this year’s GTS championship I need to win as many races as I can, so this will be a good time to get back on top of the podium.”
Tiger Racing announced earlier that a second Mustang Boss 302S would be added to their team for the remainder of the season, and the car is debuting in Monterey this week.* The second Boss 302S will be driven by Dane Moxlow, who first raced in the series in 2007. He qualified his Mustang in 15th, although he admits he’s still getting familiar with the car.
“While this track is familiar to me, the car is not,” Moxlow said. “My main goal at Laguna is to shake down the car and set some new benchmarks. I look forward to working with the engineers and picking the brains of Paul and Justin, who really know how to throw these Mustangs around. I love to learn, and there is no better chance than with a brand-new car and some of the best in the business on my team.”
Qualifying just behind Bell in 7th is Aaron Povoledo, who has taken over driving duties in the Capaldi Racing Mustang Boss 302S, followed by Alex Udell in 10th and Brad Adams in 12th.
