What do you guys think a 5.0 with GT40 P heads, an Edelbrock Performer 289 intake, a Holey 600 4bbl carb, and some shortie headers would make? Obviously nothing crazy, but that's what I'm looking at starting out with...

Are the P's worth the trouble of needing special headers over the regular GT-40s? Also, from what I have read smaller chambers on the P's result in a bump in compression, it shouldn't be anywhere enough to put my stock pistons in danger, should it? I believe my motor has cast pistons, but I'm not sure.....are they decent or would hypereutectic be better? Also, what came is good for a carbed 5.0 that isn't crazy expensive. Summit told me that Ford racing alphabet cams are for EFI and only pointed me to some $300+ Comp Cams one...

My friend STOCK 5.0 HO dynoed 227hp/284 tq at wheels with just exhaust/maf/pulleys in a 1988 GT.

I don't see him getting anywhere near 300rwhp without a cam. How is 302 a going to push 350ish at the crank with just heads, carb, shorties, and intake manifold

yup, no forged...no valve reliefs in the pistons either.

biggest cam you can put in there is a HO cam.

which youll want, since its a different firing order then a mustangs HO...what with its whopping 150hp.

My Uncle said I should get forged but not only are they way out of budget but I was always under the impression that they were more suited for extreme N/A power, and/or a big shot of nitrous or s fair amount of boost...? Woulr hypereutectics handle a small amount of nitrous?

I meant 300 flywheel HP. A stock HO cam is cheap and is fine. If you are staying NA leave the cast piston in it. You will have more compression with the GT40P heads but the revised compression chamber of the P head is alot more efficient and part of the reason why they were able to get rid of the EGR on them.

If you look on Corral.net or Stangnet.com you will see alot of fast GT40/GT40P combos.

There is a guy with GT40P running stock HO cam and Cobra intake making 282rwhp, thats untouched heads too!

This is with ported GT40P heads...nothing to sneeze at and the AVERAGE hp and tq #'s are impressive...

They are not as horrible as most think, my stock 93 bottom end took alot of abuse..7yrs worth and is still going strong. My friend ran 10.81@126.7 with his then I sold the stock shortblock when we parted his car and it was still perfect. A bad tune with hyper pistons = disaster. I have one in my garage out of a 94 GT with some broke ringlands but that was from nitrous abuse for years then a supercharger.
