H pipe overrated? 95gt

Check this out, as you know in my other thread that I have a nice set of l/t headers.

This is the plan.

Headers to straight round mufflers, then to turn outs in front of the rear wheels. All 3" and no H pipe.

Thoughts or information. Do these cars really need an h pipe, hell for years we ran straight dual exhaust and open headers.

ill be runnin straights from long tubes no mufs,,they use it because of pulse reverb and its supposed to draw air through ur engine better,im sure it works like anything else to a dagree,probly no diference if u can tune it to it

That's what I figured. it was also designed to enhance scavenging, but again, I do not see the point.

its to equalize exhaust pressures, as you know exhaust doesn't flow evenly, It pluses. The H simply makes the flow less choppy, 4bursts/rev with divided compared to 8 bursts/rev (the lower the bursts per rev the higher the acceleration and deceleration is in the gasses). I don't want to get into the physics too much, but acceleration and deceleration cost more energy then steady state. So the gasses in a h pipe are moving smoother then in a divided one. (ex. gas mileage in city is worse then highway)

From what I been hearing, it adds 15 to 20 hp. If you are running open headers, wouldn't the added 15 to 20 lbs. from the h pipe negate the added horsepower?

I see the logic, but on a stock ride I can see it, but a built motor with a S/C, don't think it will matter much.

yes, haha, with open headers its a bit different. You're not concerned with low end since its a pure race car at that point, unless your driving around on the street with open headers, haha. The back-pressure you lose in comparison to the gasses acceleration and decelerating is advantageous after a certain rpm and load as you might guess.

actually, the more radical the engine the more it matters. the more hp you make the more exhaust gas you create thus even more the reason to need the help of a crossoverpipe to aid in the scavenging effect. every "how to make hp" book i've ever read always say to incorporate some sort of crossover pipe in the exhaust system whenever physically possible
