In an effort to bolster interest and recruiting levels for the United States Air Force they have teamed up with Galpin Auto Sports to build a one-of-a-kind Ford Mustang dubbed the "X-1". The X-1 Mustang is part of a two-car build which also involved a 2009 Dodge Challenger dubbed "Vapor". Both vehicles will travel cross country as part of the 2009 Super Car Tour, a new recruiting initiative that began in May. The cross country mobile marketing campaign was put into action to educate younger folks on various mechanical and technical career opportunities within the Air Force.
The USAF X-1 Mustang began life as a white 2009 Ford Mustang GT and it was transformed by the team at Galpin into a recruitment tool which features matte-peralescent paint, a complete custom jet cockpit interior that includes a single-driver ejection seat mounted in the center of car, flight stick and advanced instrumentation panel. The dash is equipped with a touch screen monitor that displays night and thermal vision. Under the hood the 4.6-liter V-8 includes heads, cold air intake, cams, long tube headers and a custom tune that makes 500 horsepower. Other options on this Mustang include vertical doors, motorized steering wheel and custom foot pedals. This X-1 Mustang is truly a one-of-a-kind custom Mustang built with all the latest gadgets from the Air Force.
