By now it’s no secret that the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet is an incredibly fast car. The original models produced back in 2008 could easily turn in 9 second 1/4 mile passes, and the upgraded aluminum block cars produced in 2010 and 2012 could bring home 8 second and even 7 second time time slips.
So how does that performance translate into a 0-60 mph time, the tried and true performance benchmark of street cars? During the recent Supercar Showdown put on by the American Drag Racing League, which allows for head-to-head competition of unmodified production cars, onboard telemetry of the winning Mustang Cobra Jet driven by Bo Butner showed that he hit the 60 mph mark in a scant 1.52 seconds and reached 100 mph in just 3.26 seconds. Butner says he was stunned to hear the times, although he points out that drag racers are “much more concerned with the car’s first sixty feet of travel and always use elapsed time, rather than speed, as the reference.”
What’s even more impressive is that Butner thinks the Cobra Jet can go even faster. “The fact the weather conditions at Houston weren’t really conducive to developing maximum power makes me really wonder just how quick these cars can eventually run,” said Butner. “We really haven’t applied all the power-making techniques, such as changing gear ratios, to these cars yet. I have to believe they’ll be quicker and faster in the coming SuperCar Showdown events.”
