2009 Ford Mustang Convertible
Benefits of Driving a 2009 Ford Mustang Convertible
The Ford Mustang is a modern sports coupe that's quite satisfying to drive either in coupe or convertible form while carrying on the appearance cues of the original 1960s pony car. In base V-6 or GT form, the Mustang represents a very strong value compared to most other sporty coupes, while the convertible ranks as one of the best ways to go top-down without breaking the bank.
What's new for 2009?
A new glass roof option, optional on the V6 and GT Mustang Coupe models, is the big news in the Mustang lineup for 2009. Standard equipment on the Premium models has been expanded to now include a satin aluminum instrument panel, ambient lighting, and satellite radio, and a new Security Package with wheel locks and an upgraded alarm system is now available on the GT.
Model Strengths
- Performance
- value
- retro styling
- extensive options list
Powertrain
The 2009 Ford Mustang V-6 coupe and convertible are powered by a 4.0-liter, 210-hp 6-cylinder engine with 240 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 5-speed automatic. The performance-oriented GT models receive a 4.6-liter, 300-hp V-8 engine with 320 lb.-ft. of torque mated to a standard 5-speed manual transmission, with a 5-speed automatic as an option. Options include: high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlamps, 18-inch wheels on the V-6 coupe, and a customized instrument panel with mix-and-match lighting. Fuel-economy ratings for the model powered by a V-6 engine are 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway with the manual transmission and 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway with the automatic transmission. The V-8 Mustang earned EPA ratings of 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway with manual transmission and 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway with the automatic transmission.
Safety
When compared to the 2008 model, Ford has added even more standard safety equipment to the 2009 Mustang. Each model now includes driver and passenger front air bags, front-seat side air bags, and safety belt pre-tensioners. Special sensors adjust the deployment of the air bags based on passenger weight and crash severity.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Ford Mustang receives 5-star ratings (the Administration's highest scores) for the driver and passenger in frontal impacts. The convertible and coupe also earn the best rating of 5 stars for rollover resistance. The coupe receives 4 stars in the side-impact, rear-seat crash test. Although the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not yet conducted tests on the 2009 Mustang, the 2008 convertible received "Acceptable" ratings in frontal offset crash tests and the best "Good" ratings in the side-impact tests.
Technology
The seats in all 2009 Ford Mustangs are made with new technological and environmentally-friendly materials, the automaker says. The pony car's bucket seats are made with foam that includes a small percentage of soy-derived materials instead of petroleum-based products. Ford plans to continue this program across their model lineup-in in the near future, the automaker plans to have 40 percent of its model lineup use foam in seats and headrests.
