The noise is probably from the fluid loss...just replaced most of the lines on my Dad's F150, so I've heard some nasty things. Could be as simple as tearing a boot on the tie rods and losing the fluid out. Have you check under the car? the steering rack is right there in front of the control arms

I'll be doing some little showy stuff, sequential tail lights, thinking about a strut tower brace but I'm not sure what else I'll end up adding under the hood.... The only definite is whenever i find a GT 8.8 ... I'll swap that in with a rebuild on the diff and 3.55s
