NHTSA closes investigation into 2010-2011 Ford Mustang shifter issues INVESTIGATION RESULTS.............SEEM INCONCLUSIVE.
I'm glad this recall was dropped. The only reason this has gotten so much attention is because of a few choice individuals making a big stink about it and getting everyone else to believe they have the same problem over on a certain forum.
I got my 2012 V6 about a month ago and the only issue I've had to far in regards to the transmission is increased shifting efforts in cold weather, but this is an issue with almost all manual transmission vehicles. If Ford has a TSB out for thinner fluid that I can put in then hell, that makes it even better!
The shifting in this car is so much better than the 2007 Civic Si it replaced in my garage. I had to put aftermarket motor mounts and synthetic fluid in the Si transmission to get it to shift even acceptably.

The forum I was referring to was allfordmustangs.com. I didn't want to direct our members to some place else. But there's been a crazy amount of threads on the MT82 transmission over there. Ford's response to the NHTSA investigation is an interesting read too as you get to see what changes they made to the transmission. I believe mine was built just before the last known change was made to the transmission which was a revision to the 2nd gear synchro to prevent gear clash. I haven't really had any issues with 2nd gear except for possibly a little bit of notchiness.
I can definitely understand how folks who bought the 2011 year model might have issues though since they were early adopters. This is a great example of why I will NEVER buy the first year of a new major design overhaul to a vehicle. The Mustang had the design overhaul in 2010 but then got the underpinning upgrades in 2011 and I didn't want to take a chance with all those underpinnings being brand new which is why I opted for the 2012 instead.

The 2010 had the old v6. The engine change was significant coupled with the new 6 speed. I bought the 2010 gt for the reasons uou stated.Still had the proven 4.6L engine. Although i heard the rumors about the NEW 5.0 return, i bought the 2010 gt. YES its changes were mostly cosmetic . Nothing TECH HEAVY. Your argument is well stated. MUSTANG 3 is a completely new car. There will be some TECH carry overs though. Not many.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration exploration into shifting issues with Ford Mustangs has been sealed. The alleged issue would have affected 29,807 2011-2012 manual shifting Ford Mustangs. The bureau has ruled that no recall is essential. And therefore, those 364 drivers who complained about their mustangs should be very careful and must enhance their knowledge in whatever car they are going to drive so that problems like this won't happen again.
I have the Barton shift bracket and shift knob and it cured a lock out issue from 2-3 at high rpm. Keeps the shifter box and and linkage more aligned to the trans when shifting. I posted back in April of last year when I installed it.
If you read the MT82 thread on allfordmustangs.com, you'll see that the fluid definitely helps in cold weather, but when it gets warmer, the fluid thins out too much and there have been reports of excessive heat and noise from the trans when running this fluid.
So far, my trans has been ok as I've learned to granny shift for the first few minutes of driving till the trans warms up.
I agree that there shouldn't necessarily be a recall, but those who have had the problem shouldn't have been treated the way they were. Basically given the run around and having to bring their car to the dealer multiple times with no resolution. I'm sorry, but when I'm paying close to $40k for a car, it should work. If it doesn't, then either fix it or give me my money back.

Unfortunately at this point it is. If all goes according to plan next winter will be the last that I drive my Mustang in. It's killing me watching all the salt get on my car and in the meantime I've got an unlimited wash pass at my local touchless to keep it clean.
But yeah I'll try the original fluid this summer and let everyone here know how that goes. I've done transmission fluid changes myself in the past so it should be pretty easy.

I have been bothered by the 3 - 4 shifting at higher RPMs since I got the car. Now I have 40,000 miles on it and have not had the issue as much. I have heard complaints about 2nd to 3rd, but not the 3rd to 4th until your post here.
My take on this issue seems to be a quick shift is assisted toward 6th with out a deliberately slow and direct shift.......is there actually a "Lock out " function??
