Ford will officially announce the availability of the TracKey at SEMA in just a few weeks, and while it seems like a given that most owners of the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 will want to purchase it from their authorized Ford Racing dealer, those who want to keep their full powertrain warranty will have a tough decision to make. The fine print of the TracKey details that it will come with a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty when installed by an authorized dealer, and that this will replace the existing 5-year/60,000 mile warranty for the engine, driveline and suspension if the cause of a failure is determined to be the calibration.
In addition, those owners who possibly want to modify their Boss 302 further could have additional warranty problems as well. Ford Racing warns that modifications such as cold air kits, cams, headers or superchargers used alongside the TracKey can cause engine damage and that “damage caused by aftermarket modifications will not be covered under the Ford Racing limited warranty.”
On the positive side, a Ford Racing spokesman informed us that they expect to have no reliability issues with the TracKey calibration. “We’ve done our homework and expect this to be a zero occurrence issue but we have to cover it just in case,” he told us.

TracKey is warranted for factory-supplied material or workmanship, when installed on a Boss 302 or Laguna Seca by an authorized Ford or Lincoln Dealer, beginning upon dealer installation and registration of the part(s) with Ford Racing for the balance of 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the start date of the manufacturer’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
This Limited Warranty replaces the existing manufacturer’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty for engine, driveline and suspension parts, when the warranted Ford Racing Part is identified as the causal part of a warrantable concern.
Installation of these select Ford Racing parts by an authorized dealer does not nullify the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
All engine, driveline and suspension warranty issues not related to installation of Ford Racing parts remain subject to existing manufacturer’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Utilizing TracKey calibration with fuel that is lower than 91 octane may cause engine damage. Damage caused by low octane fuel will not be covered under the Ford Racing limited warranty.
TracKey is only applicable if the vehicle has no aftermarket engine modifications (i.e. no aftermarket “cold” air kit, headers, cams, superchargers, etc.) Utilizing TracKey calibration with aftermarket engine modifications may cause engine damage. Damage caused by aftermarket modifications will not be covered under the Ford Racing limited warranty.
