I am going to be starting another small project to get my mind off my un-finished engine. Back when I first got my Mustang it was a true spring-summer-fall daily driver. I am thinking about the few things I didn’t like about the car back then and one thing that popped out was the lack of cup holders. The aftermarket cup holders for these cars look horrid. So I searched around and found some people have grafted cup holders into where their ashtrays were.
The second reason I started this project was upon me trying to fix my floppy ash tray door I find the P/O already did, and glued several pieces of plastic to the underside. This is not allowing me to install the fix it kit from CJ Pony Parts.
The cross area of the flat ash tray part is a tight 3.5’’, so I had to find some cup holders from the junkyard that were less than that. The guys online that did it seemed to use poker table cups and Jeep Cherokee cup holders The Cherokee holders have an open slot down the side of them, which would have to be filled with resin. I also wanted to keep the Ford-all-Ford, so while scrounging the yard I found a 2005 Ford Freestyle with two 3’’ diameter cups that were flat surfaced. I walked out with it for $4.39
The plan is to graft the double cup holder section into where the ash tray was with resin and fiberglass, and then re-spray with interior dye to the original gray coloring.
