I am new to NYM. I don't actually have a mustang, but built a factory five roadster cobra using a 1996 mustang GT donor car. I did a pretty basic stock rebuild of the engine. I had the cylinder's round bored, the crank journals machined, and the heads serviced. I installed new pistons and rings as well as new bearings. I've installed a cold air intake, custom factory five/hooker headers, sidepipes, no catcons or EGR. Unfortunately the engine runs very rich, and the idle is erratic. I've purchased a BAMA tuner from American Muscle, which was loaded with a tune based upon the mods I made. Unfortunately, my first tune has not been productive; the engine still runs too rich and the idle remains erratic. BAMA is working with me on writing a new tune is great ...if it works.
But assuming it doesn't work, I'm thinking I will try a custom tune at a custom shop. Can anyone recommend a shop in the Albany NY area that genuinely has experience tuning the 4.6 mod motor from 1996, and is into doing it. I've contacted 3 or 4 shops, all of which have pretty much ignored my emails.
My main concern is fixing the rich mixture; the exhaust smell obnoxious. And the idle is dangerous. the car sometimes stalls when you clutch to a stop or into a turn. I'm not really concerned about power issues. the car weighs only 2000 lbs, so the stock 4.6L motor is plenty powerful for this car.
I'm looking mainly for a referral. If the BAMA tuner doesn't do the trick, I think it will be impossible for me to fix this myself due to the nature of the EFI and the ECU.
Thanks everyone.
