Signs of trouble begin this spring w/ occasional hesitation under light load while cruising. Kinda felt like a coil pack going.
This summer one week before the Watkins Glen Event (Aug 5th) I get the P0340 code, camshaft position sensor electrical error. Car now hesitates badly under 3K rpms, starts hard & I notice a "whine" sound, like a power steering pump. All dash gauges show normal. I changed the sensor & the code remained.
Off the the Ford dealer, 4 days from WG event. Asked them to diagnose code, "whine" sound & engine cooling fan not working. All dash gauges show normal.
I asked the Ford mechanic if he could tell where whine the sound was coming from he pointed to the Procharger, LOL. Told him that is SUPPOSED to whine. Was hard to pinpoint it. I decided myself that it sounded like the alt & would change it my self. So he moved on to diagnosing the code. His computer diagnostics told him to:
1 Change sensor (already done by me)
2 Check connectors & wiring w/ ohm meter. (wires OK)
3 Some other stuff I didnt get privy to.
4 If all tests pass then PCM is faulty, replace PCM ($1K)
Its now Wed 2 days b 4 show & they have to order PCM from manufacturer in Oregon so I cancelled my trip to WG.
This week on Tue they say my car is done, new PCM installed & flashed w/ Performance Dyno tune. Fan now works. I am happy as a pig in shit!!!!!! I get to the dealer & expect a $1500 + bill & find out they warrantied my PCM & labor because the some how THEY F'ed up the original PCM diagnosing it because they didnt realized it had been tuned????????? Dont care why really just grateful I got lucky somehow. So my cost was $$$$$$ZERO$$$$$$$. IM REALLY happy now!
Go out to start car & it barely turns over, gives a backfire but starts & IMMEDIATLY gives The F'en code back!!!!! Dam emotional roller coaster, felt like cryin right there. WTF, tech test drove the car 20 miles before I got there!!!!! No code.
They say next step is to "check base timing". I say OK check it, duh.:smash: They say $1200 to ck it. Holly chit, so much for my $$ luck, eh. Car seems to be running fine as im driving around so I decide to wait & do more research/ poking around on my own. I called Pete from Performance Dyno, he says a tune cannot cause that type of code & also check crankshaft sensor while timing cover is off if checking base timing.
Im driving around today & while @ 55mph car start to run like crap & lose power & I see my voltage gauge is bottoming out. Turn off the headlights & got enough power to so car will get me home. Then voltage was starting fluctuating wildly. Went back to dealer & installed new battery as it tested bad also.
I decided to call Brian Hoolihan, Mustang guru mechanic from Glens Falls. I give him the code & before I can even tell him about voltage problem he tells me to change my alternator. He says that he is 99.99% the alt is creating RF interference & messing up PCM.
I will replace alt ASAP & update you guys & Brian w/ results. I will be happy again if so.
