I am closing in on finishing up the sheet metal work on my 69 Coupe & I am getting ready to move on to another part of the car. I was thinking of getting the car painted but with it being in a 1 car garage & having to be moved in & out every time I want to work on it I am thinking on leaving this until last. Right now my 2 thoughts are 1) build the engine & install it & the 5 spd & replace the rear gears, or 2) rebuild the steering, suspension & the brakes. What are your thoughts?.
Mike, I probably do the 2nd one first. If you get the motor and tranny in you'll just want to drive it. I need a brake upgrade on mine and I keep putting it off, but the way work is I'll probably won't get it for another year.
That is a tough call. I lean towards #2 , especially if the engine is already out.
With the suspension work you will be trying to play around the shock tower area, and with the engine in, you will probably fine the exhaust manifolds being in your way.
Plus, what if you end up trying to weld anything (e.g. brackets)? You don't want any of that getting on/affecting a new paint job.
