Two people were killed in a crash on the Sagtikos Parkway in Commack Sunday after a southbound car lost control and spun into oncoming traffic, state police said. A dog, the lone passenger in one of the cars, survived, a witness said.
A man in his 20s in a 2006 Ford Mustang was driving south in the left lane at 4:45 p.m. just south of the Northern State Parkway when he tried to move into the right lane to pass a vehicle, police said.
As he changed lanes, he spun out, crossing the center median and into the northbound lanes of the Sagtikos Parkway, police said.
The Mustang crashed into a 1999 Cadillac Deville, driven by a 73-year-old woman, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman died en route to Good Samaritan Hospital in
West Islip. Police said their families had not yet been notified.
They had no passengers, except for a small dog.
Mike Glaser, 53, of Nesconset, said he and others - including a nurse and an off-duty police officer - pulled over to try to help.
While the nurse checked the two drivers, the off-duty officer pointed to a child's car seat in the backseat of the Cadillac.
Glaser said he opened the backdoor, turned over the car seat and breathed a sigh of relief: There was no child in the car. Then he saw "a little shaggy dog, apparently unhurt, cowering in the corner."
"I said, 'Come on little guy, come here,' " recalled Glaser, a former volunteer firefighter in Massapequa. "He stepped out and I grabbed his leash."
Glaser then shouted to the group of bystanders: "I need a dog lover!"
A woman who witnessed the crash offered to take him home. She gave her name and telephone number to police, Glaser said.
"At least the dog will go home with somebody tonight," he said.
