Hey guys, does anyone know if Lime Rock Park has an opening day event like Watkins Glen?
The WG event is cool and all, but in all reality its 3.5 hours there for 15-20 minutes of driving around the track then another 3.5 hour drive back home (at least for our area). I'm on the fence if I'm going to go again for the 2016 season. Lime Rock is only 1 hr 45 min away. I have taken a look at their website, and they don't appear to have such an event. I'm not necessarily interested in racing, so the $1200 track day or $55,000+ track membership is unappealing. To be thorough, I did look at some of the clubs on their page that might have their own events, but those pages were equally confusing.
So since the track is somewhat in our area, does anyone have any experience with that place for a WG like event?
If you are on the fence about attending next year, I will caution you that the laps for the Rally totally sucked. There were incidents last year with other clubs and at the last minute, they revoked our 2nd set of laps. They also paced us painfully slow sometimes even stopping us, went over all the rules before hand (which they never did before). After 2 laps, pulled us in sideways instead of forward for pics, then another slow lap to finish. Not to mention the boot happened to be closed, so the whole thing took about 5 - 10 min. I didn't mind so much as I was there for the weekend but if I had driven out for the day, it would have been a long ride home. Many people were disappointed. Not saying this is how it will be next year. but just warning you. I don't know of any other tracks that host this type of event and I'm actually quite surprised based on what has happened, that WG still does.
So basically you pay $150 for an hour or so of track time. There are several classes, including paced laps for those just wanting to experience the track at a leisurely stroll. HELMETS ARE REQUIRED. Lots of information on the site of how it works, take a look!
As of right now there are no events listed yet for 2016, but they've mentioned it will occur this year as well. Last year was the first year they did this. Its run by the SCCA and sponsored by TireRack.
The two closest tracks that participate (per the site so far) are:
- Thompson Speedway Motorsporks Park in Thompson, CT (157mi, 2hr 27min from Clifton Park)
- New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ (288mi, ~5hr from Clifton Park)
