start with the basics, CHECK TIMING . the timing can absolutely change mid drive, happens more than you think. bolts loosen, bolt may be tight but dist isnt, adv. weights get stuck, dist. gears wear out, cam gears wear out if wrong gear is used, etc. I can go all day with little things that...

carb and cam are limiting factors. but if all is set up and tuned correctly you should be a low 12 in the qtr making around 280 hp +/-

that motor has cast pistons and cast rings, thats a downgrade from a normal 86 up 302 and makes for a bad foundation for current or later builds. you already stated it would be 600$ to rebuild yours so you would be wasting an extra 250$ to buy something that is of lesser quality. I could rebuild...
